50 years of sailing experience on board – and I was the beginner.
What I learned about leadership from the skipper. ⛵😊
Last year in Stuttgart, during my advanced training in narrative organizational consulting, someone said to me:
👉 „Why don't you get a sailing license!“
It sounded crazy at first—but the idea wouldn't let me go.
Back in Münster, I signed up right away – without ever having sailed.
The theory exam for the SKS license came in December. (Spoiler: It was more effort than I expected. 😉)
Then, this summer: 14 days of sailing practice in Slovenia.
New crew, new surroundings – and a skipper with 50 years of experience.
I was the newcomer. Processes, terms, even reading the weather – everything was new to me.
💡 What did I learn? Leadership on a sailboat isn't theory. It's real action, every minute.
The skipper created a safe framework – mistakes were allowed.
He trusted instead of controlled – everyone took responsibility.
– In critical moments: Clarity, not discussion.
Leadership is not shown in words – but in behavior. Especially under pressure. And at sea, you feel that every minute.
Unpredictability, complexity, responsibility – these are everyday occurrences at sea.
A good leader stays calm, provides direction, and supports the team. Not with pressure, but with trust.
What particularly impressed me:
Our crew was diverse. One person came from New Zealand. Different perspectives – a common goal.
Just like in real business.
I am taking away not only the newly acquired SKS license from this time, but also many impulses for my work.
Because leadership begins with the courage to try new things – and with people who let you grow.
What was your biggest learning journey?
Let's talk – in confidence, as friends, and as equals. 😊
